Decorated in underglaze blue, with a scholar and a lady in leisure a garden accompanied by her maid, carrying a tray with a jug and two cups. An old man sits in a chariot accompanied by his attendant beside an architecture and a pierced ornamental rockwork, the scene possibly inspired by the Romance of the Western Chamber. The decoration repeated on the low domed cover centred with a hallow ring knot.
The base of the dish is inscribed with the Bi Ding Ruyi mark, translates as ‘may all your dreams/aspirations come true’. It is associated with good luck in taking or passing the imperial exams.
